The record-shattering high water levels have dropped in all of the Great Lakes. Lake Ontario dropped 28 inches, Lakes Huron and Michigan — which are connected and have the same level — declined 14 inches Lake Erie fell 17 inches, and Lake Superior 6 inches.
Low humidity and sunny skies this winter boosted evaporation. The lakes also had relatively little ice cover due to milder and drier weather from November through April and well-below normal snowfall. Although lake levels usually rise in spring and summer, the rise is late this year and won’t be as dramatic as during the past two years.
